This is a hand turned burl mortar & pestle. The pestle is 5-7/8" in length and 1-5/16" at the largest diameter. The mortar is 3-7/16" tall and 4-11/16" in diameter. The inside depth is 2-5/8". They are both maple burls despite the color difference. The pestle burl has beautiful flames or tiger stripes. There are a few old checks in it that I don't expect to run any further. The bowl has some nice swirls, a lot of pinheads and a few live edges. Ironically the live edges make it easier to hold. They are both extremely hard specimens and they have been treated with a butcher block conditioner made by Howard. It is readily available and food-safe. We recommend a quick hand wash and towel dry when used. When it starts to look dry more conditioner can be applied.
