Here is a tortured Red Maple root staff that was barely clinging to life. The pith in this one was rotted and mostly missing. It was caused by animal damage, like a favorite buck rub or starving animals in late winter when the sap just starts to flow. Whatever caused the damage it healed around it and continued to grow. These are a nice base to glue in artifacts all the way up or fill with some glow-in-the-dark epoxy resin...or anything else you can imagine. It stands 71" tall and the shaft is 1-1/4" in diameter up to about 2". It is a raw material and the bark was stripped with a drawknife, hence it has subtle flats and tooling marks. Like the others nothing else has been done to it. It weighs just shy of 4#. (ufws395)
