Here is a creepy root staff with a lot of missing mass. If I recall it was a Black Cherry and it had a lot of isolated rotten holes yet it was still clinging to life. As I thin the overgrown thickets I remove the damaged and deformed saplings to improve the stand. This one was both. Yes, the strength is compromised (only at the roots) but it creates cool caverns and holes. I see possibilities to back-light a gem in the fairy hole or maybe even a crystal sphere on the top strapped in. It doesn't have a full "cradle" to hold a sphere but it's acceptable for a tennis ball size (ball for reference only). It stands 71" tall and weighs just under 3#. The shaft varies in diameter from 1-1/4" to 2" in diameter. It was harvested and the bark was stripped with a drawknife before it was put up to dry. The drawknife leaves subtle facets as well as some cambium behind to give it a rustic appearance. This is a raw material ready to be customized. (ufws328)
