Here is a thick, fat Balsam fir staff. The heavy shaft ranges from 1-3/4" up to about 2-1/2" in diameter and it stands 71-1/2" tall/ It was harvested and the bark was stripped off with a drawknife so it has tooling marks along the entire staff. When a wood "round" like this dries it often develops "heart splits" that originate from the pith. This one already has splits started and they'll probably get wider as it dries and the tension is released. Currently it weighs a hefty 4#10ozs and it'll lose more moisture as it seasons fully.
