Here is another Red Maple sapling that had a hard life. The large, discolored patches are areas that were stripped by a rodent (squirrel, porcupine), or a rabbit. The dead pith is evidence that it was a favorite for years, possibly a buck rub even. The smaller mammals skin them in the spring to feast on the sap and it scars over until the following spring. The rest of the bark I stripped with a drawknife so it will dry without rot. It stands 6' tall and the roots barely fit in an 8" x 8" girth box. The diameter of the trunk varies from 1-3/8" to 1-3/4". This is a raw material, still a little green from being harvested in the spring of '25, and it currently weighs 4# 1ozs.(ufws262)
