How do I choose a competent
contractor?
Good question. The best way is to ask him
for a list of past clients for references. Once you have this list, call a few
random ones and ask direct questions about his service and quality. It is also
important to visit a few of his past jobs to see the quality of his work.
You’ll know right off whether or not it is an
honest person who will be easy to work with. Make sure there is no personality
conflict and realize that they are in the business because they enjoy it. If
you come off as condescending or egotistical they will probably just move on to
a greener pasture.
Also, tailor your choice for your project.
Oftentimes when an outfit gets too much work, they hire a large crew. Therefore
the contractor who you finally choose and trust may not even be on the jobsite
full time. The foreman may be making the important decisions. Have you seen
his work?
